Earlier this month I attended my first MIPIM in sunny Cannes, what a great experience that far exceeded my expectations. I’m not entirely sure what I was expecting, but the number of people and the diversity of attendees was pretty incredible.
I found that the event was a great opportunity to catch up with existing clients and contacts in an informal setting, in addition to meeting new prospects.
We held our own informal Cowgills drinks event on the Wednesday afternoon in a newly opened bar located in the old town of Cannes. This is the first time that we held our own event at MIPIM and I have to say it was a great thing to do. It was fantastic to see our clients and contacts exchanging cards and business at our event, it’s something we’ll definitely repeat in future years.
I learnt that despite the doom and gloom of Brexit, development in the North West is happening and continue to happen. Myself and our property funding director David Rainford met a number of truly aspirational developers who have great growth plans and who we can really help to get their projects off the ground. We were also able to introduce them to a number of other people in the industry who can help them further. It was also very promising to hear that investment in the UK has not been significantly deterred despite the uncertainty and imminent stamp duty changes.
Conversations with referrers were also crucial. We met with like-minded solicitors, banks, and many others, looking at ways we can work together to assist our clients, and generate further business. As someone quite new to Cowgills it was a great way to extend my network, and we’re already looking forward to and planning next year’s trip!
